This, I think, was the first series of books I read (Kids of Polk Street by Patricia Reilly Giff). I borrowed the books from both the school library and the public library. I hadn't thought about the series in years and when I did I learned the library doesn't have them anymore. Sad!
So, I am thinking of buying the books and starting a collection of these books I used to love so.
The only thing is, I need to make sure (if at all possible) to get the books with the original illustrations. The new ones just don't do it for me. The cover art is part of the thrill for me. Just seeing them takes me back. The new ones just won't do that.
So, what were your favourite books when you were a kid? Do you still read them?

Hiya April. My fave was Thornton W. Burgess. I don't know if this link will work or not but let's try:

He wrote wonderful (to me, a kid in the 50s and early 60s) stories about animals and their adventures. The books were small, blue hardcovers with plain covers. Inside were quite a few B&W illustrations. Charming stuff. Alas, I have none but now you've got me thinking Amazon or Ebay....
Great idea, April! I actually still have some of the books I read as a kid: Danny and the Dinosaur by Sid Hoff, Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel... I also loved Judy Blume. Oh, what memories!
There's nothing like a childhood book, I don't think. My parents read to me a LOT and for that, I'm so thankful.

P.S. I think you're right about the original illustrations. Seeing them really does take one on a walk down memory lane!
Thanks for your comments!
I have a few Berenstein Bears books, that I bought at a thrift shop. I love those ones too. I also remember loving those big Disney storybooks. They were great.
